Position Summary
We are seeking a highly experienced Technical Writer 3 for a long-term engagement in Lansing, Michigan. This hybrid role is critical for ensuring that all digital content and documentation meet the stringent requirements of ADA WCAG 2.1 AA compliance. The successful candidate will work closely with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) and the Digital Accessibility Review Team (DART) to identify accessibility gaps and implement corrective measures. This position requires a blend of technical writing prowess and a deep commitment to digital inclusivity. As we look toward the regulatory landscape of 2026, the importance of ADA compliance has moved from a best practice to a mandatory requirement for all public-facing government digital assets.
Core Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive reviews of existing documents and web content to ensure full alignment with ADA and WCAG 2.1 AA standards.
- Develop, write, and edit high-quality technical manuals, user guides, and online help systems for diverse audiences.
- Partner with MDARD leadership and web development teams to prioritize accessibility remediation efforts.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on digital accessibility, providing training and mentorship to staff on best practices and the use of accessibility checkers.
- Maintain a consistent voice and quality across all published materials, ensuring they are accessible to users with disabilities.
- Document complex technical processes in a clear, concise, and user-friendly manner.
- Identify, document, and prioritize accessibility gaps across various digital platforms.
- Train staff on accessibility best practices and the use of Microsoft and Adobe Accessibility Checkers.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 13 years of professional experience in technical writing or a related field.
- At least 4 years of dedicated technical writing experience within a corporate or government environment.
- Proven expertise in ADA WCAG 2.1 AA compliance and the use of Microsoft and Adobe accessibility tools.
- Experience working with State Government agencies is highly preferred.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to lead training sessions for technical and non-technical staff.
- Experience reviewing documentation against standards and identifying gaps for at least 2 years.

Working in a hybrid capacity, you will balance independent writing tasks with high-level meetings with MDARD leadership. You must be able to translate technical accessibility requirements into business terms, helping stakeholders understand the importance of compliance not just from a legal standpoint, but as a core component of public service. Your 13+ years of experience will be called upon to navigate the complexities of state government workflows and to provide steady guidance during the one-year project duration. This role is not just about writing; it is about advocacy for every citizen’s right to access government information. You will be responsible for maintaining the department’s style guide, ensuring it reflects the latest trends in digital accessibility and plain language initiatives.

Compensation & Location
Salary: $115,000 – $155,000 per year
