Role Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced Test Architect with a strong background in POS Automation System Testing and Mobile Test Automation. This role requires a deep understanding of various automation tools such as Appium, Playwright, Cypress, and Tosca, along with extensive experience in automation architecture. The ideal candidate will have over 10 years of overall testing experience and at least 5 years in automation architecture roles. This is a contract position initially for 4 months, with a preference for local candidates in Seattle, WA.
Key Responsibilities
- Automation Strategy & Architecture: Define and own the end-to-end automation strategy for POS, Mobile, and related platform integrations. Architect scalable, modular, CI/CD-integrated automation frameworks that support multiple device types, OS versions, POS hardware peripherals, and cloud/on-prem systems. Establish standards for test design, quality gates, automation patterns, and tooling.
- Framework & Tooling Development: Build and maintain automation frameworks using tools such as Appium, Playwright, Cypress, Espresso/XCUITest, API testing tools, and cloud device farms (BrowserStack, Sauce Labs). Implement automation for POS systems via appropriate protocols/frameworks (e.g., Java-based frameworks, custom device drivers, retailer POS SDKs, or vendor tools).
- System & Technology Leadership: Lead test automation across POS applications & peripheral integrations (scanners, printers, payment terminals), APIs, microservices, and middleware supporting retail transactions, and Mobile native apps (iOS/Android) and Web-based mobile flows. Collaborate with engineering leads to embed automation early in the SDLC (shift-left mindset).
- Technical Governance & Best Practices: Establish coding standards, versioning strategies, reusable libraries, and test data management practices. Conduct code reviews, mentor automation engineers, and influence architectural decision-making.
- CrossFunctional Collaboration: Partner with Product, Engineering, DevOps, Security, and Store Operations to ensure automated validation of new features, OS upgrades, Hardware refresh initiatives, and release certification for store deployments. Drive end-to-end test readiness for major events (e.g., seasonal peaks, promotions, rollout waves).
- Quality Delivery & Continuous Improvement: Integrate automation into CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps, Jenkins, GitHub Actions). Embed observability and diagnostics into automation pipelines to accelerate defect identification. Champion a culture of data-driven quality, leveraging analytics to improve detection, stability, and coverage.
Required Qualifications
- Primary Skills: POS Automation Testing, Test Automation tools (Playwright/Selenium), Cloud Services, DevOps & CICD (Jenkin/Gitlab), POS H/W and peripheral testing experience.
- 10+ years in software testing with 5+ years in automation architecture roles.
- Hands-on expertise with POS, mobile test automation (using Appium, Playwright, Cypress, Tosca or similar tools).
- Experience with POS system testing, ideally in retail or high-volume transactional environments.
- Strong understanding of API testing, microservices, and integration validation.
- Proficiency in modern programming languages (Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python).
- Expertise in CI/CD pipelines, Git, cloud testing platforms, Kubernetes, containerization platforms, and device farms.
- Strong understanding of retail transaction flows, payment integrations, and hardware interactions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with retail POS platforms (NCR, Oracle, Epson, Zebra, or custom POS frameworks).
- Exposure to shift-left, shift-right, or continuous quality engineering models.
- Strong communication skills with ability to influence executives and engineering teams.
What This Role Enables
- Enterprise-wide automation reuse and consistency
- Faster, safer deployments across all stores and mobile channels
- Dramatically reduced manual regression overhead
- Higher release confidence and speed
Special Requirements
