Role Overview: Test Lead for Smart Meter Applications

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Test Lead to spearhead end-to-end testing initiatives for our critical Smart Meter application suite. This role is pivotal in ensuring the reliability, security, and performance of utility operations software that impacts thousands of end-users. As a Test Lead, you will be responsible for the entire quality assurance lifecycle, from initial requirement analysis and strategy development to final execution and stakeholder sign-off. The ideal candidate brings a deep understanding of the Utility Operations domain, specifically within the context of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and Smart Grid technologies.

Key Responsibilities and Strategic Execution

  • Develop and implement comprehensive test strategies and detailed test plans tailored for complex Smart Meter applications.
  • Lead the execution of functional, integration, regression, performance, and User Acceptance Testing (UAT) cycles.
  • Validate critical APIs, backend services, and geospatial map layers through a combination of manual and automated testing methodologies.
  • Perform rigorous cross-browser and cross-platform testing to ensure a seamless and consistent user experience across all supported environments.
  • Collaborate extensively with cross-functional teams, including software developers, business analysts, and project managers, to align testing objectives with business requirements.
  • Manage the defect lifecycle using industry-standard tools like JIRA and HP ALM, ensuring accurate documentation, prioritization, and timely resolution.
  • Conduct root cause analysis for complex defects and lead defect triage meetings with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ensure strict compliance with QA best practices, organizational testing standards, and specific utility industry regulations.
  • Provide transparent and data-driven test progress reports, including key quality metrics and risk assessments, to senior leadership.

Technical Leadership and Automation Integration

While manual testing remains a core component of this role, the Test Lead will be instrumental in driving our test automation maturity. You will be expected to identify high-value automation candidates, particularly within API testing and repetitive workflow validation. Exposure to Tricentis Tosca is highly preferred, as we aim to leverage model-based test automation to improve efficiency and coverage. You will mentor junior testers and offshore units, fostering a culture of quality and continuous improvement. Your leadership will ensure that the testing team remains agile and responsive to the evolving needs of the Smart Meter project, maintaining high standards of deliverable quality throughout the software development life cycle (SDLC).

Domain Expertise and Professional Requirements

The successful candidate must possess a strong background in Utility Operations. Understanding the nuances of meter data management, billing integrations, and grid reliability is essential for creating effective test scenarios. You should be comfortable navigating complex technical architectures and communicating technical risks to business stakeholders. This position requires a proactive individual who can work independently in a fast-paced, onsite environment in San Francisco. By joining our team, you will play a vital role in modernizing utility infrastructure and ensuring the success of next-generation smart energy solutions.
