Role Overview: Senior Unix/Linux System Administrator
We are currently seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Unix/Linux System Administrator for a critical 6-month contract engagement located in the heart of Silicon Valley—San Jose, California. As we move into 2026, the complexity of enterprise infrastructure continues to evolve, and this role is at the forefront of managing high-availability environments that support global operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for the end-to-end lifecycle of server management, from initial architectural builds to advanced troubleshooting and security hardening.
Core Technical Responsibilities
- Server Administration: Provide in-depth expertise in the installation, configuration, and maintenance of diverse Unix/Linux distributions, including Suse, AIX, RHEL, and CentOS. You will be the primary point of contact for ensuring these systems operate at peak performance.
- Automation and Scripting: Leverage advanced proficiency in Bash and Python to develop robust automation scripts. Your goal will be to eliminate manual intervention in deployment cycles and configuration management.
- Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Utilize Ansible and Terraform to manage infrastructure state and streamline the provisioning of resources across hybrid cloud environments.
- Patch Management: Execute comprehensive patching strategies using enterprise-grade tools such as RedHat Satellite, IBM NIM, and SUSE Manager. Ensuring compliance with security mandates is a top priority.
- Virtualization and Containerization: Manage virtual machine lifecycles within VmWare and OpenShift environments. This includes handling complex tasks such as cloning, migration, and remote administration of containerized workloads.
- Networking and Connectivity: Apply a deep understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, and SSH to troubleshoot connectivity issues in highly distributed and segmented network environments.
Security and Compliance Standards
In today’s threat landscape, system security is paramount. You will be expected to implement OS hardening techniques, manage granular user access controls, and ensure all systems adhere to strict compliance frameworks. This includes regular auditing and the proactive identification of vulnerabilities within the Unix/Linux stack. Your role involves collaborating closely with the security operations center (SOC) to mitigate risks before they impact production environments.
Operational Excellence and Collaboration
Beyond technical prowess, this role requires exceptional soft skills. You will work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment where clear communication and teamwork are essential for resolving complex, cross-functional issues. You will participate in on-call rotations and contribute to the continuous improvement of operational playbooks. The ability to document processes clearly and mentor junior staff members is highly valued as we strive for excellence in our IT service delivery.
Future-Proofing the Infrastructure
As a Senior Administrator, you are expected to stay abreast of emerging technologies. Whether it is exploring the integration of AI-driven monitoring tools or optimizing kernel parameters for high-performance computing, your insights will help shape the future of our infrastructure. This 6-month contract offers a unique opportunity to work on high-impact projects in one of the world’s most innovative tech hubs.
