Position Overview: Costing Manager (Project Controls)
Sysmind is seeking a seasoned Costing Manager with a robust background in Project Controls to support major capital projects in the Houston, Texas area. This is a specialized role that focuses on the lifecycle of capital expenditure projects, requiring a professional who understands the nuances of project cost management rather than traditional corporate accounting. The successful candidate will be responsible for the financial health and predictability of large-scale engineering and construction projects, ensuring that budgets are managed effectively and risks are mitigated through proactive analysis. In the dynamic environment of Houston’s industrial sector, accurate costing is the backbone of project success, and this role serves as the primary guardian of project financial integrity.
Core Responsibilities and Project Impact
- Provide comprehensive project cost management and controls support for assigned capital projects, acting as the financial lead for project teams.
- Develop and maintain sophisticated cost forecasts and cash flow projections, providing leadership with a clear view of future financial commitments.
- Analyze project performance against established budgets, identifying variances and forecasting the impact of current trends on the final project cost.
- Collaborate closely with engineering, procurement, and project leadership teams to develop cost control strategies and support informed decision-making.
- Monitor cost trends and potential risks, communicating financial impacts to stakeholders through detailed reporting and periodic cost reviews.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to refine cost management processes and enhance the accuracy of project controls data.
- Manage the integration of cost data from various sources, ensuring a single version of truth for project financial status.
- Support the project lifecycle from initial estimation through to final close-out, ensuring all financial documentation is accurate and compliant.
Mandatory Qualifications and Experience
Candidates must have a minimum of 7 years of experience specifically within Project Controls or Cost Management roles, preferably within the energy, infrastructure, or industrial sectors. It is important to note that this is NOT an accounting or finance-focused position; we are looking for individuals with hands-on experience in project cost controls, including forecasting and cash flow management. A deep understanding of capital project lifecycles is essential. Applicants must demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary project team. Excellent communication skills are required to effectively engage with stakeholders and present complex financial data in a clear, actionable manner. This role is based in Houston, TX, with a hybrid schedule requiring onsite presence from Monday through Thursday, offering remote flexibility on Fridays. Occasional site travel may be required to ensure a thorough understanding of project progress and field conditions. The ideal candidate will be proficient in project management software and have a track record of managing costs for projects exceeding $50M in value. Special Requirements
Strictly Project Controls background required; traditional accounting/finance backgrounds are not a fit. Onsite Monday-Thursday requirement. Limited quarterly site travel.
Compensation & Location
Salary: $125,000 – $165,000 per year (Estimated)
