Role Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Controls Engineer for a 12-month contract opportunity in Seattle, WA. This role is critical for the development and optimization of advanced control systems, particularly within the realms of motion control and automated hardware. The ideal candidate will have 3-6 years of experience and a strong technical background in PLC programming and object-oriented languages. This is a “Phone/Video Hire” position, making the interview process efficient for qualified candidates. You will be joining a team at the forefront of industrial automation, working on systems that power the next generation of material handling and robotics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement control system solutions using PLC-based IEC 61131-3 structured text and function block formats.
  • Program and optimize motion control systems for applications such as material handling, conveyor systems, and actuated hardware.
  • Utilize CodeSys for system development, ensuring high reliability, safety, and performance across all platforms.
  • Write and maintain code in modern object-oriented languages like C++ or Python to support system integration and data analysis.
  • Collaborate with hardware engineers to design, test, and commission custom actuated systems and industrial robot arms.
  • Manage code versions using industry-standard tools like Git, SVN, or CodeCommit to ensure project integrity and collaboration.
  • Perform system troubleshooting, debugging, and performance tuning on various platforms including microcontrollers, PCs, and mobile devices.
  • Ensure all control systems meet rigorous safety standards and operational requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • 3-6 years of professional experience in control systems engineering or a closely related field.
  • Extensive experience with CodeSys is mandatory and considered a primary requirement for this role.
  • 3+ years of specialized experience in motion controls, including material handling systems and complex actuated systems.
  • Proficiency in PLC programming (IEC 61131-3) with a focus on structured text and function blocks.
  • Strong programming skills in modern object-oriented languages, specifically C++ or Python.
  • Experience with industrial robotics or custom hardware actuation systems is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with version control systems like Git, SVN, or CodeCommit.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Systems Engineering.

The Seattle Engineering Ecosystem

Seattle is a global leader in aerospace, logistics, and cloud technology, providing a rich environment for Controls Engineers to thrive. This 12-month contract offers the chance to work on sophisticated engineering projects in one of the world’s leading tech hubs. The project focuses on the intersection of software and physical hardware, requiring a candidate who is comfortable working with both code and mechanical systems. The work environment is innovative and challenging, providing the opportunity to solve complex problems in motion control and robotics.

Advanced Motion Control Techniques

In this position, you will apply advanced control theory to real-world hardware. This includes tuning PID loops, managing multi-axis motion, and integrating sensors for real-time feedback. Your expertise in CodeSys will be the backbone of the control architecture, allowing for flexible and scalable automation solutions. You will also explore the integration of microcontrollers and mobile devices into the broader control network, pushing the boundaries of traditional industrial automation.

Contractual and Professional Growth

This 12-month engagement is designed for an engineer who wants to make a significant impact on a long-term project. While the initial term is one year, the complexity and scale of the work provide ample opportunities for professional growth and the potential for extension.
