Position Overview: Senior Neo4J Developer (Financial Services)

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Neo4J Developer for a high-profile, long-term contract engagement with Morgan Stanley, one of the world’s leading financial institutions. This position is based onsite in New York, NY, and requires a candidate with a deep technical background in graph databases and a strong understanding of the financial services industry. The primary focus of this role is to leverage Neo4j to solve complex business challenges related to Fraud detection, Anti-Money Laundering (AML), and risk management. This is a critical role that demands both technical excellence and the ability to work effectively within a large, sophisticated enterprise environment.

Detailed Responsibilities

  • Graph Database Development: Design, develop, and maintain complex graph data models using Neo4j. You will be responsible for ensuring that the graph architecture is optimized for both write performance and complex analytical queries.
  • Cypher Query Optimization: Write expert-level Cypher queries to extract insights from interconnected data. You will be expected to perform deep query performance tuning, utilizing optimization techniques such as custom indexing, schema constraints, and efficient modeling patterns.
  • Algorithm Implementation: Utilize Neo4j’s out-of-the-box graph algorithms (e.g., PageRank, Community Detection, Pathfinding) to identify suspicious activities and hidden relationships within financial datasets.
  • Full SDLC Participation: Engage in all phases of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC). This includes business requirements analysis, data analysis, data architecture/modeling, development, unit testing, and production deployment.
  • Business Collaboration: Work closely with business users in the Fraud and AML departments to understand their pain points and translate them into technical solutions. You must be able to explain complex graph concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Data Analytics: Apply strong data analytics skills to identify trends, anomalies, and patterns in large-scale financial data. You will help the bank stay ahead of increasingly sophisticated financial crimes.
  • System Integration: Ensure that the Neo4j ecosystem integrates seamlessly with other enterprise data sources and downstream applications.
  • Documentation and Best Practices: Maintain high-quality documentation for all database designs and queries. Promote best practices for graph database development within the engineering team.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • US Experience: A minimum of 10 years of overall professional work experience within the United States is mandatory.
  • Neo4j Expertise: At least 7 years of dedicated, hands-on experience with Neo4j Graph databases. You should be considered a subject matter expert in this technology.
  • Cypher Proficiency: Mastery of Neo4j Cypher queries and a deep understanding of the Neo4j engine’s internals.
  • Financial Domain Knowledge: Proven experience working within the financial services sector, specifically with Fraud, AML, or similar compliance-related business units.
  • Data Modeling: Strong skills in data architecture and graph modeling. You should know when to use a graph database versus a relational database.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. You must be able to articulate technical decisions and their business impact clearly.
  • Interpersonal Skills: A professional approach with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, high-pressure environment.

Mandatory Screening and Interview Process

Due to the sensitive nature of the work and the client’s requirements, the following screening steps are strictly enforced:
