Role Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and hands-on Senior Mechanical Engineer for a critical 6-month contract engagement in Rockville, MD. This role is centered on the design, development, and validation of mechanical enclosures and assemblies for advanced smart automation systems. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in high-stakes industries including Aerospace (commercial and military), Wind Energy, Defense, and Marine sectors. You will be responsible for the full lifecycle of mechanical design, from initial SolidWorks modeling to final validation and documentation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and engineer complex mechanical parts and assemblies specifically for smart automation systems.
  • Utilize SolidWorks on a daily basis to create high-fidelity models, detailed engineering drawings, and complex assemblies.
  • Lead the development of mechanical enclosures that house sensitive electrical and pneumatic components, ensuring environmental protection and structural integrity.
  • Develop comprehensive assembly procedures, technical documentation, and step-by-step instructions for manufacturing teams.
  • Conduct rigorous testing and validation of designs to ensure they meet strict performance and safety requirements.
  • Engineer innovative mounting solutions designed to protect internal components from extreme vibration and thermal stress.
  • Optimize designs for long-term serviceability, accessibility, and maintainability in field environments.
  • Manage Bills of Materials (BOMs) and engineering tracking using advanced Excel functions.

Industry Context

The systems you will work on are primarily utilized in the Aerospace sector for surface preparation and de-painting of aircraft structures. Additionally, these automation technologies are adapted for the Wind Energy market, specifically for composite surface finishing of turbine blades. In the Defense and Marine sectors, your designs will support rigorous surface work on military aircraft, naval ships, and submarines. This role requires a deep understanding of the unique environmental challenges present in these heavy industrial and military applications.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.
  • Minimum of 6+ years of professional experience in mechanical design.
  • Expert-level proficiency in SolidWorks for daily design tasks.
  • Strong background in designing mechanical enclosures for electrical/pneumatic integration.
  • Proven expertise in vibration mitigation and heat management strategies.
  • Ability to work onsite in Rockville, MD, for the duration of the project.
  • Experience in fast-paced, project-driven contract environments.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with industrial automation equipment or aerospace-adjacent products.
  • Prior experience in contract engineering roles with limited onboarding time.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel for engineering documentation and data tracking.

Compensation & Location

Salary: $118,000 – $165,000 per year (Estimated)
