Role Overview
We are seeking a visionary Android Principal Mobile Architect / Technical Program Lead to spearhead the technical strategy and architectural foundation for our next-generation APP 2.0 driver application. This is a high-impact, part-time engagement (20 hours per week) designed for a seasoned expert who can own the end-to-end technical roadmap. The successful candidate will be responsible for bootstrapping a greenfield Android application on a modern stack, ensuring it meets the rigorous demands of field operations on rugged devices. This role requires a hybrid presence in Houston, TX, with a commitment to be on-site at least once per month.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and bootstrap a new, greenfield APP 2.0 Android application utilizing a modern, Kotlin-first stack.
- Design and oversee a robust offline-first and synchronization architecture specifically tailored for field operations on rugged devices in low-connectivity environments.
- Lead the phased migration of core application workflows from the legacy system to the new APP 2.0 platform.
- Partner with backend teams, enterprise architecture, product owners, and operations to ensure the application is scalable, observable, and production-ready.
- Set the technical direction, make critical architectural decisions, and guide internal development teams to ensure long-term program success.
- Implement MVVM + Clean Architecture patterns and modular design principles to ensure code maintainability and scalability.
- Utilize dependency injection frameworks such as Hilt or equivalent, along with Room, WorkManager, and the Jetpack suite.
- Develop a phased modernization roadmap, starting from foundation bootstrap to full production cutover.
- Establish project structures, build variants, CI/CD pipelines, and baseline tooling for the mobile engineering team.
- Conduct deep code reviews and architecture audits to maintain high-quality standards across the codebase.
Technical Requirements
- 10+ years of professional experience in Android development, with a significant portion spent in architect or lead roles.
- Proven track record of delivering complex, production-grade mobile applications at scale.
- Expertise in Kotlin, MVVM/MVI, Clean Architecture, and Dependency Injection (Hilt/Dagger/Koin).
- Deep understanding of Room DB and WorkManager for background scheduling and data persistence.
- Experience managing multi-module Android projects and navigating the complexities of large-scale app development.
- Strong background in offline-first applications, logistics, or driver-facing apps (routing, delivery, fleet management).
- Experience optimizing performance for rugged or constrained devices with variable connectivity.
- Ability to integrate mobile applications with complex backend enterprise systems via REST, GraphQL, or ESB.
Strategic Leadership & Operations
- Define observability standards, including logging taxonomy, telemetry events, and health dashboards.
- Ensure secure handling of authentication, tokens, PII, and device identity in alignment with enterprise security and MDM policies.
- Mentor and upskill internal Android teams on APP 2.0 patterns and best practices.
- Communicate complex architectural trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders effectively.
- Drive performance and reliability goals, including crash/ANR budgets, sync SLAs, and app startup times.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align contracts and integration patterns for staged rollouts via MDM and pilots.
Project Bootstrap & Migration Strategy
The Principal Architect will be the primary driver for Phase 0, which involves the foundation and new app bootstrap. This includes defining the target offline-first and sync architecture, focusing on local sources of truth, event models, queuing, and conflict handling. As the project progresses, the architect will oversee the migration of login modules, home/route summaries, route execution, exception handling, image processing, and inspections. A critical component of this role is managing the coexistence and cutover strategy between the legacy APP and the new APP 2.0 to ensure zero downtime for field operations. Your leadership will ensure that the application is not only functional but also observable and operable in a high-stakes production environment.
Special Requirements
No H1Bs. Once a month on-site in Houston, TX. 20 hours per week engagement.
