Role Overview: Technical Product Owner at Delta Airlines

Delta Airlines is seeking a highly motivated and technically proficient Technical Product Owner (TPO) to join our dynamic team in Minneapolis, MN. This is a long-term contract opportunity (12+ months) designed for a professional who excels at the intersection of business strategy and technical execution. As a TPO, you will play a pivotal role in the innovation and end-to-end launch of digital products that enhance the travel experience for millions of customers. This hybrid role requires a candidate who is local to the Minneapolis area, as it involves both remote collaboration and essential in-person interactions at our corporate facilities. You will be responsible for bridging the gap between high-level business objectives and the technical implementation details required by engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Agile Leadership: Manage project scope and timelines effectively, ensuring that the development team remains aligned with the broader product vision. You will coordinate all essential Agile ceremonies, including sprints, retrospective meetings, and daily stand-ups, fostering a culture of transparency and continuous improvement.
  • Product Roadmap Execution: Collaborate closely with Digital Business partners and various vendors to co-develop a comprehensive product roadmap. You will be responsible for driving products and features from initial concept through to successful launch in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment.
  • Requirement Definition: Translate high-level product roadmap features into well-defined, actionable product requirements. This includes creating detailed user stories, defining acceptance test criteria, and ensuring the technical team has a clear understanding of the “Definition of Done.”
  • Backlog Management: Prioritize and maintain the sprint backlog for assigned products. You will balance the competing requirements of various stakeholders, including analytics, design/user experience, engineering, and user enablement, to ensure the most valuable features are delivered first.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Act as the primary point of contact for external communications from customers and stakeholders. You will partner with business leaders across the organization to inform the product vision, strategy, and feature prioritization.
  • Technical Guidance: Lead the product functional design process based on an intimate knowledge of both the users and the underlying technology. You will help teams implement changes effectively and ensure that all deliverables meet the highest quality standards at the end of each sprint.
  • Performance Tracking: Develop and maintain appropriate tracking and reporting mechanisms for product performance post-launch. You will turn data insights into actionable outcomes, evaluating the success of features and informing future investment strategies.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Professional Experience: A minimum of 3 years of direct experience in a Scrum Master or Technical Product Owner role is required. Candidates should demonstrate a proven track record of managing complex digital products within an Agile framework.
  • Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with software development processes is essential. You should be comfortable discussing technical architectures and understanding the constraints and opportunities presented by modern technology stacks.
  • Agile Expertise: Excellent knowledge of Scrum techniques and artifacts (such as user stories, automated testing, and backlog refinement) is mandatory. A good working knowledge of other Agile frameworks (Kanban, Lean, etc.) is also expected.
  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Business, or a similar field is required. This educational background provides the foundational knowledge necessary to navigate the complexities of this role.
  • Certifications: While not mandatory, a Scrum Master certification (CSM, PSM) or Product Owner certification (CSPO) is considered a significant plus.
  • Soft Skills: Outstanding organizational, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution abilities are critical. You must possess excellent communication and servant leadership skills to effectively guide development teams toward higher Scrum maturity.

Special Requirements and Compliance

  • Location and Mobility: Candidates must be local to Minneapolis, MN, and possess a valid Minnesota driver’s license. The role requires the ability to attend in-person interviews and work in a hybrid capacity.
  • Interview Process: The selection process includes an initial Skype screening followed by a mandatory Face-to-Face (F2F) interview in Minneapolis.
  • Pre-Employment Screening: Upon receiving an offer, candidates must successfully complete a comprehensive background check and drug screen as per Delta Airlines’ safety and security protocols.
