Position Summary

The Lead Mainframe Developer position is a critical role within our client’s infrastructure team, focused on maintaining and evolving the core systems that power their business operations. While the industry continues to move toward cloud-native applications, the mainframe remains the backbone of many large-scale enterprises, particularly in the financial and logistics sectors. This role is designed for a seasoned developer who possesses a mastery of IBM Mainframe environments and is eager to lead a team through complex development cycles. We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Mainframe Developer to join our team across multiple locations including Indianapolis, Plano, Boston, Portsmouth, and Seattle. This is an onsite contract position requiring a deep technical background in legacy systems modernization and mainframe application development.

Core Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, coding, testing, and maintenance of complex mainframe applications.
  • Utilize IBM Mainframe technologies including COBOL, IMS DB, DB2, and JCL to build scalable solutions.
  • Manage messaging queues using MQ Series and debug applications using Xpeditor.
  • Collaborate with Quality Assurance teams to define test plans and ensure software integrity.
  • Conduct peer reviews of code and technical documentation to maintain high standards.
  • Participate in on-call rotations to address production failures and performance bottlenecks.
  • Bridge the gap between legacy systems and modern frameworks like Spring Boot and Git.
  • Monitor and trouble-shoot system performance, resolve issues (on-call issues, performance issues, etc.) and coordinate with respective support teams.
  • Assist in research and issue resolution for processing of business data.
  • Demonstrate a self-starter attitude with exceptional initiative, pulling opportunities rather than waiting for push.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 to 8 years of experience in IBM Mainframe development.
  • Strong proficiency in COBOL, JCL, and DB2.
  • Experience with IMS DB and MQ Series is essential.
  • Familiarity with modern development tools such as Git and Java-based frameworks like Spring Boot.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to lead in a virtual or hybrid environment.
  • Strong testing experience including unit, integration, and contract testing.
  • Demonstrated quick learner with the ability to ask questions and offer recommendations.

Legacy Modernization and Leadership

As a Lead Developer, your responsibilities extend beyond individual contribution. You will be a mentor to junior developers, conducting thorough peer reviews and providing constructive feedback to ensure code quality and adherence to best practices. You will also collaborate closely with the Quality Assurance team, helping to define testing strategies that cover unit, integration, and contract testing. This ensures that every release is stable and meets the high standards required for production environments. The role also involves a significant operational component. You will participate in on-call rotations, serving as a primary point of contact for system failures or performance issues. This requires a calm under pressure and the ability to troubleshoot complex problems across the mainframe stack, including IMS DB and MQ Series. You will work with hardware and software support teams to resolve issues quickly, minimizing downtime and impact on the business. This is an onsite position, requiring your presence at one of our key hubs, where you will lead by example and foster a culture of technical excellence.
