Role Overview: Manager SRE and Automation Lead
Located in the bustling financial hub of Jersey City, NJ, this onsite role is designed for a seasoned technology leader with over 15 years of experience. As the Manager of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) and Automation Lead, you will be at the forefront of transforming a large-scale, completely on-premise environment into a highly automated, self-healing ecosystem. This position is critical for an organization that prioritizes system reliability, scalability, and deep observability. You will lead a dedicated team of SREs to eliminate operational toil and implement sophisticated automation solutions that ensure 24/7 availability of mission-critical applications.
Core Responsibilities and Leadership
- Direct the Automation SRE teams in the design and implementation of end-to-end self-healing solutions.
- Partner with Production Support to identify manual bottlenecks and replace them with automated workflows.
- Architect and enhance observability platforms using tools like AppDynamics, Splunk, and the Elastic Stack.
- Establish and enforce SLA, SLO, and SLI frameworks to provide transparent metrics on service health.
- Drive initiatives to significantly reduce Mean Time to Detect (MTTD) and Mean Time to Resolve (MTTR).
- Provide mentorship and career development for junior and mid-level SRE engineers.
- Act as the primary Subject Matter Expert (SME) for event correlation and centralized logging strategies.
- Develop comprehensive technical documentation, including environment flow diagrams and functional requirements.
- Lead the cultural shift towards an ‘Automation First’ mindset across the IT organization.
Technical Expertise and On-Prem Infrastructure
Unlike many roles focusing solely on the public cloud, this position offers the unique challenge of managing a massive on-premise footprint. You will work with a diverse array of technologies, including Unix/Linux and Windows Server environments, as well as various database platforms like Oracle, MS SQL Server, and MongoDB. The automation of these systems requires deep scripting proficiency in Python, Java, and Shell. Additionally, you will oversee enterprise batch scheduling using tools like AutoSys and CRON, ensuring that complex job streams are optimized and resilient. The goal is to bring cloud-like agility and reliability to a traditional data center environment through advanced telemetry and intelligent automation.
Experience and Strategic Vision
- 15+ years of total experience in IT, with at least 6 years dedicated to hands-on SRE implementation.
- Proven track record of leading automation initiatives in large-scale enterprise environments.
- Expertise in at least two major monitoring and observability tools (e.g., Grafana, Prometheus, ThousandEyes).
- Strong understanding of distributed systems and the complexities of on-premise networking and storage.
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and senior leadership.
- Commitment to continuous improvement and operational excellence in a high-pressure environment.
