Role Overview: NestJS Backend Architect
As we move into 2026, the demand for highly scalable and resilient backend systems has never been higher. We are seeking a visionary NestJS Backend Architect to lead the design and governance of our next-generation API platform in the New York City Metropolitan Area. This is a high-impact role where you will define the architectural blueprint for a NestJS-driven ecosystem, ensuring that every component aligns with enterprise-grade standards for security, performance, and scalability. You will be the bridge between business requirements and technical execution, working closely with Tech Leads, frontend architects, and integration teams to deliver robust, future-ready solutions.
Key Responsibilities and Technical Leadership
- Define and govern the backend architecture for a large-scale NestJS API platform, ensuring modularity and maintainability.
- Provide architectural oversight for NextJS integration, ensuring seamless communication between backend APIs and frontend components.
- Lead the design of API-first architectures, implementing RESTful patterns, versioning strategies, and comprehensive governance.
- Drive data modeling and performance tuning for MongoDB, ensuring high availability and efficient indexing for complex datasets.
- Establish and enforce quality standards for unit testing, integration testing, and automated documentation using Swagger/OpenAPI.
- Mentor senior engineers and Tech Leads, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.
- Participate in client-facing architectural discussions, translating complex business needs into actionable technical roadmaps.
- Oversee the implementation of non-functional requirements (NFRs) including security protocols, resilience patterns, and horizontal scaling.
- Design and implement Backend-for-Frontend (BFF) patterns and microservices architectures to support diverse client applications.
- Collaborate with DevOps teams to integrate CI/CD pipelines and platform engineering concepts into the development lifecycle.
Technical Requirements and Expertise
The ideal candidate will possess expert-level proficiency in JavaScript and the Node.js runtime, with deep architectural expertise specifically within the NestJS framework. Advanced TypeScript skills are mandatory, as is a proven track record of designing large-scale, distributed systems. You should have extensive experience with MongoDB, including advanced data modeling and performance optimization. A strong understanding of frontend architectures like React or Angular is essential to ensure effective API consumption patterns. Furthermore, exposure to cloud-native architectures (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and event-driven patterns will be highly valued in this role. We are looking for a leader who can navigate agile and scaled agile delivery models while maintaining a steadfast focus on security standards such as OAuth and OWASP.

Compensation & Location
Salary: $180,000 – $240,000 per year (Estimated)
