Role Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced Smalltalk Developer for a critical migration project located in Owings Mills, MD. As a Senior Smalltalk Developer, you will be responsible for analyzing existing codebases, identifying migration paths, and implementing robust solutions using Object-Oriented Programming principles. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the migration of legacy Smalltalk applications to modern platforms, ensuring minimal disruption to business operations.
  • Develop and maintain high-quality code using Smalltalk environments such as VisualWorks or VA Smalltalk.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including business analysts and modern stack developers, to understand business requirements and translate them into technical specifications.
  • Perform deep-dive debugging and performance tuning of complex Smalltalk systems to identify bottlenecks and optimize execution.
  • Ensure the architectural integrity of the system during the transition phase, maintaining strict adherence to object-oriented design patterns.
  • Mentor junior developers and provide technical guidance on Smalltalk best practices and legacy system nuances.
  • Document system designs, migration strategies, and operational procedures to facilitate knowledge transfer and future maintenance.
  • Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback to ensure code quality and consistency across the team.

Technical Requirements

  • 8-10 years of professional experience in Smalltalk development, with a focus on enterprise-level applications.
  • Strong proficiency in Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) and Design Patterns, with the ability to apply these concepts to complex problem-solving.
  • Experience with Smalltalk migration projects is highly desirable, particularly those involving transitions to Java, C#, or cloud-native architectures.
  • Familiarity with relational databases and SQL, including the ability to write and optimize complex queries.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail, with a methodical approach to debugging and system analysis.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively interact with stakeholders and technical teams.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field is required.
