Role Overview

The Data Governance Lead for Payment and Transaction Banking is a critical role within the modern financial ecosystem of 2026. As global markets move toward instantaneous settlement and hyper-transparency, the management of data has shifted from a back-office function to a front-line strategic priority. This position is specifically designed for a seasoned professional with over a decade of experience who can navigate the intersection of high-stakes banking operations and cutting-edge data architecture. Located in the heart of New York City, this hybrid role offers the opportunity to shape the data strategy for one of the world’s leading financial institutions. The primary objective of the Data Governance Lead is to embed robust, scalable, and automated governance practices across all payment and transaction banking platforms. This is not a static oversight role; it is a dynamic, hands-on leadership position that requires deep integration with Agile delivery teams. You will be responsible for ensuring that every feature, from initial design to final release, adheres to the highest standards of data quality, lineage, and privacy. In an era of increasing regulatory scrutiny, your work will ensure that the organization remains audit-ready and compliant with international standards such as ISO 20022.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain a robust data governance framework specifically tailored for high-volume transaction banking environments.
  • Lead the implementation of canonical data models to ensure interoperability across global payment rails including SWIFT, ACH, and Real-Time Payments.
  • Collaborate with Agile delivery teams to embed data quality checks and metadata tagging directly into the CI/CD pipelines.
  • Oversee data lineage mapping to provide full transparency from the point of transaction initiation to final regulatory reporting.
  • Partner with Chief Data Officers and Risk Management leads to ensure compliance with evolving privacy laws and financial regulations.
  • Drive the adoption of automated data observability tools to monitor the health of payment data in real-time.
  • Manage the lifecycle of sensitive customer data, ensuring strict adherence to encryption and archival policies.
  • Analyze audit findings to identify governance gaps and continuously strengthen control frameworks.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in Data Governance or Data Management within the financial services sector.
  • Deep expertise in Payment systems, including clearing, settlement, and liquidity management.
  • Proven track record of working in Scaled Agile (SAFe) environments.
  • Advanced knowledge of data modeling tools and metadata management platforms such as Collibra, Alation, or Informatica.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence stakeholders at the executive level.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Finance, or a related technical field.
  • Experience with DAMA-DMBOK, DCAM, or COBIT frameworks is highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with data vault or graph-based models for modern payment data modernization.

The Future of Data Governance

In 2026, data governance is no longer about restriction, but about enablement. As the Data Governance Lead, you will be at the forefront of this shift, ensuring that data is accessible, reliable, and secure. You will work in a hybrid environment that values both collaborative in-person strategy sessions and focused remote execution. This role requires a visionary who understands that data is the lifeblood of transaction banking and who is committed to maintaining its integrity in a rapidly changing digital landscape. Your leadership will directly impact the bank’s ability to innovate and compete in the global market.
