Role Overview

As a GCP Data Platform Architect, you will be responsible for the strategic design, optimization, and governance of enterprise-scale data solutions on Google Cloud. You will serve as the technical lead for migrating and managing high-stakes financial data, ensuring that the architecture is not only high-performing and cost-effective but also meets the stringent security and compliance mandates of American Express.

Key Responsibilities

  • BigQuery Architecture & Optimization: Lead the design of complex BigQuery environments, including partitioning, clustering, and materialized views to ensure low-latency query performance and cost efficiency.
  • Data Governance & Dataplex: Architect and implement a unified data management layer using Google Dataplex. Define data discovery, metadata management, and data quality rules across the data lake and warehouse.
  • Security & Compliance: Design “Secure-by-Design” architectures. Implement VPC Service Controls (VPC-SC), Identity and Access Management (IAM) at scale, and Row/Column-level security. Ensure all data handling complies with SOX, PCI-DSS, and internal Amex risk frameworks.
  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Partner with DevOps teams to automate the provisioning of data resources using Terraform, ensuring consistent environments across Dev, Test, and Prod.
  • Strategy & Leadership: Define the “Point of Arrival” (POA) for modern data stacks, moving from legacy on-prem systems to a GCP-native Lakehouse architecture.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Act as the bridge between Business Intelligence units and Cloud Engineering to translate complex financial requirements into technical blueprints.

Technical Skills & Qualifications

  • Required Core Skills:
  • GCP Expertise: Deep hands-on experience with the Google Cloud data stack: BigQuery, Dataplex, Dataflow, Cloud Composer (Airflow), and GCS.
  • Data Governance: Proven track record of implementing Google Dataplex for data cataloging, lineage, and centralized governance.
  • Security Mastery: Advanced knowledge of Cloud IAM, Data Loss Prevention (DLP) API, and VPC Service Controls.
  • Optimization: Expert-level SQL and experience in BigQuery slot management and reservation models.
